Enter the month of February, where stores are hawking their ‘LOVE’ gifts – how to say to your loved one that they are THE most special person on the earth! But God has been telling us of His Love for us throughout time – that YOU are His chosen… that YOU are loved beyond anything this world has to offer. He doesn’t need a ‘special month or day’ to declare His unfailing love for His master creation. God’s LOVE is far superior to secular love. We ‘love’ when things are going well – but if that mood is broken by a cross word, a word spoken in anger, an unflattering remark, an inappropriate action… whatever might break the ‘mood’ – then what we think of as love is shattered and angry words or actions result. That’s emotional love. God, however, is NEVER like that. His Love is not ‘emotional’ – it is far deeper and one that we cannot fully understand what His love for us, His creation, cost Him – His Son. According to the Bible, we see the steadfastness of His Love for us. And we find His instructions to us to maintain our equilibrium steadfast IN His Love. No matter what is going on in your life… no matter what may shake you to the very core of your being, God NEVER stops loving you, and in whatever situation life can throw at you, you can (and should) always rest confident in His Love for YOU! The most quoted Bible verse – and one that has gained much attention in the media lately because of an exceptional professional athlete named Tim Tebow, is: John 3:16: “For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God gave US His Son. Did we deserve it? Absolutely not. Did we ASK Him to send His Son? No, but He did it anyway. Why? Because of His unfathomable LOVE for us. And we are told that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). He didn’t wait for us to get our act cleaned up and THEN come for us. No – He came to rescue us while we were still deep in sin. We would never have been able to save ourselves – Romans 5:6 tells us that “…when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly….” It was because of HIS LOVE… not because of anything we could ever do. When we are His, then His LOVE is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5), and that gives US the ability to love others and be examples of His love right in our own family, our community, our workplace, our school – everyone we come in contact with should be able to see the Love of God flow through us in our dealings. I John is one of the most instructive Books in the Bible on God’s Love, and, in fact, Chapter 4 is filled with many promises to the Believer of God’s Love. In verses 16-19, we are told: “and we have known and believed the love that God has to us, God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out fear; because fear has torment. He that fears is not made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us….” The ‘clincher’ comes in verse 21: “And this commandment have we from Him, That he who loves God loves his brother also.” (brother = fellow-man) I encourage you to read the First Epistle of John and let the Love of God through His Word flow in to encourage you, to heal you of life’s hurts, and then flow through you to this lost, hurt and dying world. The Apostle Paul further encouraged us with these words, found in Romans 8:38-39: “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We are His and He is ours. His love never fails. And if we are His and His LOVE is in us, then WE never fail. He will ‘put us over’ … He will see us through whatever mountains may try to block our path or no matter what situations may come against us. Poems have been written about love; books have been written about love … plays, movies – all written about love, but there is not one anywhere that can begin to compare with the greatest Love Story of all: The Story of the Love of God. From Genesis through Revelation, the Love of God is the main story line that permeates the pages – God’s message to us is one of Love – His Love that never dims, fades nor fails. Remember: You are loved with an everlasting love. He will never leave you nor forsake you and He holds you in the palm of His Hand!
